Billingsgate is perhaps the
oldest market in London. The wharf has long been a busy place where one can purchase
such delicacies
as lobster, herrings, turtle, and turbot imported from America.
Billingsgate was officially established by parliament as a fish market in 1698.
Fishmongers and fishwives also wandered the streets of London
in search of customers.
