Horse racing, the sport of kings. Owning, breeding and racing horses is one of the few occupations a gentleman could undertake without the taint of trade. Attending and betting on races ranked among the favorite of gentlemanly diversions. There were numerous tracks, but there were three of premier importance. Newmarket with its four mile races over road and turf, Epsom Downs with its best known race, The Derby, and Doncaster with its best known race, the St. Leger.
